"Get ready for the return to school"

This year, don't leave the back-to-school shopping until the last minute!

According to the newspaper Dinheiro Vivo and the Cetelem observer, most Portuguese prefer to buy back-to-school supplies only two weeks in advance. In a universe of more than 500 respondents, 48% said they do their shopping two weeks before the start of classes. There are also those who wait even longer (34%) and only spend money one week before or even after school starts. A minority (13%) prefers to take care of everything a month or more in advance.

We believe that, although it is still a minority, preparing for the school re-entry with some calm only has benefits! In this article, we will show some of the advantages of anticipating the return to classes and how to do it in the best way!

First of all, explore the school calendar 2020/2021. This year, classes will start between September 14 and 17. The first 5 weeks will be dedicated to recovering the content that was not taught due to Covid-19 and the consequent home teaching.

There are two steps that we consider important before you start buying back-to-school supplies: 

1st Step: for a planned back to school is to do a clean-up of school supplies from last year: take the opportunity to donate or throw away what you won't use, see what is in good condition to be reused, and make a list of what is really necessary to buy.

 Step 2: Budget. The return to school is a time of many expenses and sometimes it is necessary to cut back on some extras. According to another study by the Cetelem observer, the Portuguese spent, on average, €450 on the return to school in 2019/2020. By organizing your school supply purchases in advance you will save some money, take advantage of pre-back-to-school promotions, and also spread the expenses over the weeks leading up to September.

3rd Step: Realize if you can buy everything in the same place to avoid unnecessary trips and queues.

Avoid confusion and long lines

It is well known that the return to school is synonymous with many hours spent looking for all the materials and books on the list, long lines, and a lot of confusion. All this stress can be avoided if you plan your school supply shopping. Take advantage while most Portuguese people have their minds on vacation to buy everything calmly.

Save money

From mid-August, all the shop windows change to the theme of back to school and often the prices of certain highly sought-after materials are quite inflated. If you get ahead a little, you can get the same material for the normal price or even with the summer promotions.

These discounts are especially noticeable on more expensive equipment, such as computers, tablets, or printers.

Don't forget to ask for an invoice to deduct from your expenses on the IRS.
