What to expect from the next return to school?

What to expect from the next return to school?

In the midst of all the uncertainty and instability caused by Covid19, the Ministry of Education has already released the start dates for the 2020/2021 academic year as well as the calendar school and some measures that will allow the face-to-face return to school.

The expected dates for the next year are:

  • 1st Period – starts between September 14th and 17th, with the last day of classes on December 18th
  • 2nd Period – Starts on January 4th, 2021 and ends on March 24th
  • 3rd Period – Starts on April 6, 2021 and ends on June 9th (for the 9th, 11th and 12th), to 15 June (7th, 8th and 10th) and June 30th (preschool and 1st and 2nd cycles)

The first five weeks will be dedicated to the recovery of content that was left untaught due to Covid-19 and the consequent distance learning. Easter holidays will be shorter and the third period longer.

From September, priority will be the face-to-face teaching regime, although the guidelines for schools also provide for mixed and non-face-to-face regimes in the event of a health regression. Students who benefit from school social action or who are protected by commissions for the protection of children and young people will take classes at school, even in mixed and non-face-to-face regimes.

Regarding the face-to-face return to schools, the Ministry of Education, together with DGS, released some of the mandatory measures for all people who enter educational establishments.

Mandatory Mask Use

The first rule to ensure safety when returning to face-to-face classes is the mandatory use of a mask within all educational establishments by all persons entering the school: teachers, non-teaching staff, guardians and also by students from the 2nd cycle onwards. The Minister of Education, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, announced that masks will be distributed and other personal protective equipment to schools for the return to school in September.

Wash your hands

A solution of alcohol gel should be available at various points in educational establishments and washing hands with soap and water should become a regular practice.

Time Division

According to the rules of the General Directorate of School Establishments (DGEstE), the class schedules must be organized in half-day shifts so that the concentration of students within educational establishments is reduced to 50%.

Preferably, classes should be taught in large spaces. Whenever possible and without compromising the students' health, classrooms should be ventilated, keeping the windows and doors open, in order to allow better circulation of the air.

Each class must be assigned a permanent classroom, where students must have fixed seats. Tables should preferably be arranged with the same orientation and lunch hours should be staggered to avoid concentrations.

Social Withdrawal

According to the guidelines of the Directorate-General for Health sent to schools, a social distance of one meter should be guaranteed “whenever possible”, a measure that has generated some controversy as it is a shorter distance than Whenever possible, a physical distance between students and between students/teachers should be guaranteed.

Finally, it will be necessary to invest in more professionals, so an amount of 125 million euros was announced for hiring teachers, non-teaching staff and technicians specialists, including social workers, psychologists and mediators, to facilitate the recovery of students.

400 million euros will also be invested to launch tenders to buy computers and ensure connectivity between 2020 and 2021, within the scope of the project Escola Digital.

In any of these scenarios, having a computer will be indispensable! Whether to study, do group work, reports or have online classes. At Digiplanet, the refurbished computers are prepared to meet the needs of students. To find out more click here.
